Preparing Your Body and Hair

Ok, so now that you have your mind set on getting dreads, lets move on..

Dreadlocks do take lots of time to put in. They can take anywhere from 10-20 per dread depending on the size and the experience of your backcomber. I’m going to be dead honest, backcombing can be really painful at times so it is imperative that you have a load of things to take your mind off the pain. Things like video games, movies, music, books, food, etc. are all good for this job. Maybe even some good pain relievers!

Another thing you are going to need is a comfortable seating arrangement for you and your backcomber because it can become very tedious. Office chairs or something of the like is your best bet because they are meant to be used all day (and are also height adjustable). Setting up the backcombers chair higher then your hour will make the process less stressful for the person backcombing your hair.

Now, to make sure your hair is ready.. It is a myth that dirty hair is good for dreads. The oils in the hair will actually tend to loosen the hairs. You will need some residue free shampoo or soap to wash your hair with. These types of washers leave none of that smelly goodness behind that other generic soaps too. You will also need a metal comb to backcomb with. Plastic ones will not work as they tend to break after doing just a few dreads! Last thing you must have to complete the process is small rubberbands and dread wax. There are many other products out there to help speed up the process once the actual dread is created so check out the products page. Get ready!

First thing you have to ask yourself is do you really want to do this? Dreadlocks are more of an adventure than a one day thing. They will take many months to mature and look beautiful everyday. You have to really commit to it. We are still in the very beginning stages. Basically preparing your mind for what is to come. There are many different way to make dreadlocks and it will be your choice depending on how mcuh effort you put into them and how fast you want them to lock up. Some days they will look killer while other days your hair will just be a giant frizz ball. This is when some truly hard work comes in.

Once you have your locks you will probably get a lot of questions about them so you should be ready to answer some questions like “how do you wash your hair?” or whatever it may be. Whatever the question is, you come up with your answer! These questions will get easier to answer over time.

People get dreadlocks for many different reasons including spiritual, fashion, or craziness. If you’re reading this right now you probably already have a good idea as to why you want to get your new locks, so stick to it!

Dreadlocks are a big new thing in your life, so now might be a good time to pick up other new things. You could go skydiving, read a new novel, or give up ciggarettes. Just another thing to add to this awesome and wild ride!
